Daniel & the guitar

It has been a loooong time since I did an "update" on Daniel. When he was a baby, I used to do updates frequently. I still remember writing this one about Daniel, this one about Benjamin, and this one about Esther. It almost feels like I wrote them yesterday!

Anyway, Daniel is now almost 8, and in Primary Two. A few years ago, I discovered Sungha Jung and was amazed at this pint sized kid's talent. He was an overnight youtube sensation, and I've been following his journey from boy to tween to teen. I even bought his album online!

Naturally, some of this enthusiasm spilled over to my sons, who were soon clambering for me to play Sungha Jung's videos on loop, and play Sungha Jung's CD in the car.

Last year, Daniel asked me if he could learn the guitar. I wasn't sure if a 6 year old was ready, but a music school nearby was having a sale on junior guitars, so for Dan's 7th birthday, I bought him a $50 guitar. Well, Dan's been having guitar lessons ever since--and he's been quick on the pickup, being able to read chord charts & figure out strumming patterns that honestly, I have trouble visualising, let alone memorising. (I frequently feel my kids surpass me in many things--hmm, perhaps I'm just slow!)

Here's a video of him playing a praise song (which I am meekly singing the words of in the background) and one of him playing a classical piece, which I recorded last month. The praise song is being played on his Auntie's guitar, so it does look huge next to him! While he is definitely no Sungha Jung, my heart does warm everytime I hear him play and it is good to see him not having any difficulty with the instrument. I, on the other hand, have always wanted to play the guitar but my brain is encrusted and I find it super hard to read guitar chord charts & fret boards! Agg....

I hope & pray that Daniel will be able to use his musical talents to serve God! =)
