Daniel: rocket card

There's been a recent spate of rainy weather which has kept us indoors. No matter, the kids are quite happy to play with their lego and other toys. And one day last week, I found some small cards, which I passed to Dan and Ben to draw. "Write a card to your friend," I said. And this is what Dan did (see pic)! He asked me how to spell "Andrew" and "from". The rest was written without help.

Dan also drew a rocket on the front of the card. OK background--ever since eons ago, Dan has been pestering me to take him to Andrew's house because they are going to blast off into outer space together. "Andrew has built a rocket and we're going to go this afternoon!" he would say.

In fact the first day school started in late-June it started again--"Mummy, I think I need to cancel my piano lesson today because I need to go to Andrew's house. He has bought rocket tickets. And we're going to blast off! This time, it's real!" Dan looked at me with his big squirrel like eyes. He was very serious. When I asked him how to get to Andrew's house, he said, "Andrew drew me a map." The map was produced and it comprised a drawing of a car, two houses and a line joining the two houses together.

I really wasn't sure what to say. But somehow, we managed to change the topic. But it keeps coming up! So finally, I told Daniel that if he wants to go to Andrew's house to blast off into outer space, he has to ask Andrew to ask his mummy to write me a note to tell me his address and when this blasting off will take place exactly. The next day Daniel came back and said, "Andrew said he'll ask his mummy." And that seemed to be the end of that. For now.

I think it's really cuute that Dan has found a friend in Andrew. And his teacher, during the meet the parents session in May, confirmed that Daniel and Andrew are "buddies". Occasionally, I'll find pencil written notes and cards in Dan's school bag, presumably from Andrew. They are also planning to go camping together. At least that one is actually do-able, as opposed to space travel!

Guess I should probably try and say hi and introduce myself to Andrew's mum one day. I wonder what she thinks of her son blasting off into space with my son!

p.s. don't ask me what "coomde" is... dan said it's supposed to be a dinosaur, but not one i've ever heard of!
