Easter # 3: Our Lord's Supper

Posted by spots (Singapore, Singapore) on 13 April 2009 in Food & Cuisine and Portfolio.

The highlight of our Good Friday festivities was something I came up with: Our very own family Lord's Supper! Haha.... sounds a bit corny ya. but it was fun! After going through the resurrection egg packets & colouring/drawing scenes from the easter story, we hunkered the kids into the kitchen to make easter eggs. I bought a packet of food colouring tablets from SKS and we had fun rolling the eggs around in 6 different "eastery" colours. Then, the kids helped me prepare egg mayo spread by mashing up the eggs & mixing in the Japanese mayo. I don't have a pic of it, but you can imagine, with all the "eastery" colours, our egg mayo spread looked very happy & festive!

Anyway, the rest of the meal was prepared by me while Daddy hunkered the kids to the living room to watch a portion of the DVD "Miracle Maker". As usual, Dan was a bit tentative at first (dramatic movies with dramatic music scare him) but he quickly piped down and watched the whole 35 mins with Daddy giving him a running commentary of what was going on.

Our Lord's Supper consisted of freshly-baked bread (well, I bought it frozen and 'freshly-baked' it haha!), grilled fish with parmasan cheese, beef hot dogs with sloppy joe sauce and some dips from Cold Storage (Daddy chose olive dip for that 'authentic Middle Eastern flavour'. However, the kids hated it. So much for that...) Oh! And we had Ribena in place of wine! Before we chowed down, we went through the significance of the bread and the 'wine'. Then, everybody gobbled everything in sight. It was a really lovely meal!!

This has been the first Easter where we've made such a big effort to 'doing stuff' to help the kids remember the Easter story. I hope and pray that it will be useful, although my kids tend to have the attention span of butterflies. Ho hum.

Still, I feel these are things that we could repeat every year--from the resurrection egg packets, to the colouring/drawing, to the Lord's Supper. The next time round, the kids could even help me bake bread from scratch! And when they are older, we could do an actual reading from the Bible before we sit down to eat! All sorts of cool things!

Anyway, I hope my ideas have given you food for thought and that they are not too silly! :)
