Samuel's birthday cakePosted by spots (Singapore, Singapore) on 26 September 2008 in Food & Cuisine and Portfolio. This is a long overdue post. About 2 weeks ago, I baked this cake with the boys. It's become a regular activity--cooking with the kids. They'll help me put lumps of butter in a pot, or throw things away. Dan can also help with cracking eggs and stirring of batter. It's usually quite fun! This birthday cake was made with a steamed chocolate cake recipe that can be found on Kitchen Capers Forum section. You'll have to sign up to view it, but I assure it, it's well worth it. The steamed chocolate cake recipe post on the forum continues to have the highest hits under the Baking section, even till today, because everybody loves it so much! As for the frosting, I did NOT use the frosting recipe recommended by the Kitchen Capers website--I had tried it before and did not have much success. Instead, I used this amazingly easy and yummy recipe from Allrecipes.com. My only complaint is that the recipe calls for way too much icing sugar. The next time round, instead of 1 pound of icing sugar, I may use just 380-400g! All in all, I was quite pleased with the cake and will definitely use the same recipes to make future cakes. I was reflecting that baking my own cakes could save a lot of money, given that birthday cakes these days cost like $60-90 each for a decent sized one. And I have a family of 4, so that'd be $240-360 a yr, for ____ years! Baking your own cake is also quite fun, especially if the kids can help out. We shall see, we shall see! :)
